E. Donald Oliver

E. Donald OliverEdward Donald Oliver 86, of Montrose, Pa. passed away Sunday, November 1st, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, Pa. Born November 9th, 1922 in Dimock, Pa, Edward—known to friends by his middle name, Don—was the son of the late Thomas and Mary (Lynch) Oliver. His wife, Mary (Stone) Oliver predeceased him in June, 1993. A proud United States Marine, Don voluntarily served his country in the Pacific Ocean theater of World War II. Once the war had ended, Don returned home northeastern Pennsylvania, where he owned and operated a successful trucking business for many years. In 1963, he joined the United States Post Office in Montrose as its Postmaster, a role he proudly held for 25 years before retiring in 1988. Don was a member of The Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church and then St. Paul's Episcopal Church (Montrose, Pa.). He was also a dedicated member of the VFW Ayres-Stone Post 5642 (Montrose, Pa.), the American Legion Post 154 (Montrose, Pa.), and the Lion’s Club. Throughout his life, Don was an active and steadfast supporter of the Democratic Party and spent a period of time serving on the Democratic National Committee. Don was known for his infectious enthusiasm for life and the people in it. He was always happiest when spending time with his loving family and the many lifelong friends he made throughout his years. Don found solace in an eclectic array of hobbies and activities. He drew significant enjoyment from his involvement with the “Rocking Chair Club”—a recreational poker club he started with friends many years ago—and his favorite pastimes, which included fishing, baseball, hunting, and spending time at his Elk Lake cottage with the people he loved. Survivors include daughter, Candace M. Oliver of Montrose, Pa., grandson, Sean Edward Oliver of Seattle, Wa., sisters-in-law Margaret Canfield of Montrose, Pa., Anna Mae English of Syracuse, N.Y. Kay (Oliver) Bokunewicz of Tulsa, Ok., and many nieces and nephews that he cherished through his years. In addition to his parents and wife, his three brothers John, Raymond, and Walter and his sister, Alice Pierson, predeceased him. Don led a life full of happiness surrounded by friends and family who will always love him dearly. He will be sincerely missed but never forgotten. Service will Saturday, 2:00 PM at the Montrose Cemetery. If desired memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 60 Church Street, Montrose, PA 18801
